The film got huge success during the period of its release.Drinking alcohol, playing cards, dancing, singing, flirting with boys and falling in love are all forbidden during a Hindu's first menstrual period. Women are considered impure during that time of their life cycle because they are not yet able to have children. Because of this tradition, women are often mistreated by their families and husbands because they are not able to earn money to feed themselves or their families. The women in the film "Raasleela" are mistreated and unjustly blamed for their circumstances by their husbands. They argue that it is unfair that they should be blamed for the actions of others and forced to work when they are not yet married. The story moves back and forth in time, showing events from both perspectives: the present and the past. In the present, a young woman named Pahumai (Sharmila Tagore) is unhappy with her marriage to Hari Dutta (Ajit). She believes that she should have been mistreated by someone other than her husband. In the past, when Hari Dutta was a boy, his father died and his widowed mother had to work hard to feed her family. She was not able to afford good food for her son and he often went hungry. One day, while rounding up cattle in the forest with his friends, Hari Dutta's mother received news that her sister has died. Hari's mother immediately left work and marched towards where she thought her sister lived. When they finally arrived at the house of their uncle in the city of Varanasi, she was informed that their uncle had passed away after a short illness. Hari's mother now had to find a way to look after her children with no inheritance. Hari's mother was unsuccessful in finding a job with a good salary and she had already exhausted the money given to them at the time of their father's death. She was forced to ask for money from her brother-in-law, who lived with his wife and child – both of whom were jealous of Hari's mother because they believed that she had led an unhappy life as a widow. As Hari Dutta grew up, he loved to go into the forest, often accompanied by his friends from school. cfa1e77820
